MEASURING THE SPEED For measuring speed at sea, the log reel ( «loggrull» ) was used. A log line is wounded around the reel. On the line there are knots With regular intervals. The line is allowed to run out in the sea While a 30 second sandglass is running out itself. By counting how many knots that of out by that time, They knew how many «knots» the ship was doing. 1 knot equals 1 nautical mile ( 6080 feet ) an hour.
